It seems that there is an effort in Rhode Island to change the state’s name. The current official name of the US state of Rhode Island is the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

I am in favor of changing the states name. Apparently it is being proposed because the plantation reference brings the specter of slavery to mind for some. I think they should do it just because the name is too long.

Just dropping the “and Providence Plantations” part isn’t really worth the trouble though since none of us really knew that was the name of the state in the first place. Lets face it, you can’t remember the last time you told someone you were going to Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

I believe the name should be completely changed and urge all readers to be heard as to what the new name of Rhode Island should be by voting in the poll below.

As a special bonus, because it is what I think is the next smallest state that isn’t Hawaii (though I am not bothering to confirm that with any facts), I am also allowing readers to vote on what we will change the name of Delaware to.
