Cover Song Of The Month – Tom Jones does Burning Down The House

From deep in the iPod comes the cover song of the month. This month brings a stunning combination, the Talking Heads classic Burning Down The House as rendered by Tom Jones.

Yes, that Tom Jones.

Talking Heads has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. Their hit, Burning Down The House, is a classic that is instantly recognizable to most people. This is a performance by Talking Heads from the David Letterman show in 1983.

Tom Jones goes in a different direction with this. If you were here for the Paul Anka version of Jump, think in that direction. The original recording was done with a band called the Cardigans. The video here is not with that band, but the arrangement and feel is the same.

A little different, right?

So here we are. The poll  and comments are open. Let’s hear the love (or lack thereof) for Tom Jones’ version of Burning Down The House.

I did my civic duty and voted. Do I get a little sticker? 🙂

This post hits close to home because I love the Talking Heads and I owned the album “Speaking in Tongues.”

Best lyrics from that album? Something about sitting in the tub!

    I remember when
    Sittin’ in the tub
    Pulled out the plug
    The water was runnin’ out
    Cool down
    Stop acting crazy
    They’re gonna leave
And we’ll be on our own
    Seven times five
    They were living creatures
    Watch ’em come to life
    Right before your eyes
    How do you do?
    These slippery people
    Gonna see you through

I’m not quite as much a Tom Jones fan. That said, his version is pretty dang cool.

Thanks for turning me on to both of these videos!

I refused, on principle, to even listen to the Tom Jones version!

Tom Jones even doing this shows that….

“It’s not impossible to wreck a classic song….”

(Maybe Talking Heads can finish off the rest of the lyrics and do their version of that song in retaliation…..)

While I didn’t want to stab my eardrums out I may never be able to erase Tom Jones still tyring to be sexy. Dude you’re old.

  4. tsanda says:

your lucky burning down his house was an option cause your house was f’ed there for a second

Is there a companion piece with David Byrne doing “What’s New, Pussycat?” That would be fun.

Even better if he’s accompanied by Emmylou.

    • omawarisan says:

I agree, Byrne doing pussycat would be something to hear.

Coincidentally, Emmylou was at the studio last night. She and I are doing a duet of Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly on my duets CD

i voted surprising enjoyable but wish i could remove the “surprisingly.” there’s nothing not rad about tom jones. if only we could have gotten neil diamond to do this song too!

thanks for the vids. i love that song. hard.

  7. Betty says:

Absolutely dreadful. Gave me terrible flashbacks to the early 70s when my mother would loudly play Tom Jones & Englebert Humperdink albums on Saturday morning as she cleaned the house. Quando Quando Quando. Ugh.

So, what's on your mind?
