The Jolie Pez Project: The Jolie In Newfoundland

Serious fans of the travels of our favorite action figure, The Jolie, know that she made three stops during her first Canadian tour. They also know that only two were published. The Jolie acted as if the third never happened. She moved on to Las Vegas and the Virgin Islands and pretended like people wouldn’t notice.

Well, people noticed and they spoke up. There were protest marches at Blurt Headquarters. I contacted Dottie Maggie, who hosted The Jolie in Newfoundland and writes the fine blog Trust Me, I’m A Doctor. I told her about the protests. Together, we agreed to release this lost episode in the interest of public safety.

The Jolie On The Rock – The Fun

The Jolie arrived in Newfoundland and wasn’t long in making friends with some of the locals. I think she took pity on Robert, and his nose…she’s a softie deep down inside, and will probably return to Newfoundland to punch me for saying so.

She appreciated the view from my deck, and while not impressed with the snow still kicking around in late March, she liked being able to plan her takeover of downtown from one vantage point.

The Jolie came along to bingo, and was coaxed into helping spin the spin wheel. The ladies at bingo were big fans.

Ready to go! No dabber? No problem! She’ll just punch out the squares she gets. More satisfying that way.

The Jolie arrived in St. John’s just in time to attend the annual Beer Fest. So many beers to try!  And such perfect sized lil’ cups.

She was so amazed by this one beer, she had to make some notes in her guide books. Unsure about whether this liquid hot dog scenario was a good thing or a bad thing.

The morning after Beer Fest…Not so much a time.

The Jolie wasn’t about staying in a house with some Giant Kidney Worms, had to make sure the seal was secure.

The Jolie had less luck containing the other animals in the house. Most of them ignored her, but Tristan was feeling brave one day and came for a sniff.

I asked The Jolie if she’d like to help me bake a cheesecake…but then when she saw the bag of creme eggs she decided to “help” me unwrap them. Funny, all the wrappers seem empty…

The Jolie On The Rock – The Sights

A nice sunny day was a long time coming, but once it arrived it was up to Signal Hill!

Checking out Cabot Tower.

Discovering the view from Cabot Tower. Can see the whole city from here.

The Jolie was disturbingly interested in the artillery around Signal Hill. I tried to explain that they were long unused, but she was pretty sure she could fire ’em up if she needed to…

On the way down the hill, we had to stop and check out the Newfoundland and Labrador Retriever statues. Official Provincial Dogs, for the win!

She wouldn’t let my real dog get away with this, and I’m pretty sure she wanted to take this photo just to taunt him.

Next stop: Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America. From here, if you rise early enough (which I never do and not even The Jolie could kick me out of bed on time…) you can be the first person in North America to see the sun rise on a new day…

The guns at Cape Spear put the cannons at Signal Hill to shame. These huge gun barrels were part of Cape Spear’s wartime armament. Originally in place in Philadelphia, they were moved to Cape Spear in 1941.

The Jolie learned all about whales, but unfortunately didn’t see any. A little too early in the year for whales.

Lighthouses, fortunately, are a year round attraction. The Cape Spear lighthouse was built in 1836 and is Newfoundland’s oldest surviving lighthouse. This structure has been restored to its original state, while the original light is in a modern lighthouse down the coast a bit.

All in all, a fairly successful visit. Much was drank, much was seen and no lives were lost that I’m aware of. The Jolie was sent on her way back stateside and springtime finally arrived for real and I got very caught up in enjoying the rare sunshine and very neglectful at sharing this record of her visit…oops!

Thanks to Maggie for risking everything to have The Jolie visit her and showing her such a great time!

The Jolie’s next published adventure will be Hoboken, NJ, followed by Boise ID and Detroit, MI. Don’t forget to let me know if you want to be on the list for a visit from The Jolie. She is hoping to spend the summer and early fall in the US and Canada (she’s been told there are more than three places in Canada) then start an around the world tour.

  1. Are those Cadbury Creme Eggs? Thank goodness The Jolie didn’t touch mine. I’d have taken her out.

  2. I can’t even pick a favorite picture — but maybe the creme egg wrappers, or the lighthouse. I love lighthouses. Most excellent, work, Dottie Maggie!

  3. Welcome back La Jolie! Yikes, the same thing happens to me when I’m around Cadbury Creme eggs, especially ginat ones.

  4. Snoring Dog Studio says:

Wonderful tour with The Jolie! I’m so impressed that she can handle all climates wearing that skimpy outfit. But, she is so much more woman than I could ever be.

  5. Now I totally want to visit Newfoundland.

  6. Todd Pack says:

I agree with Wendi @ Bon Appetit Hon. It takes a lot to distract from the Jolie, but that scenery totally stole my attention. Well done, Dottie Maggie!

  7. madtante says:

A little too interested in artillery!

  8. Betty says:

Another excellent adventure. It looks really beautiful there. Alcohol seems to be a recurring theme with your reader/Jolie hosts, oma.

  9. Happy to see the “lost episode” in The Jolie Travels…makes me a bit nostalgic for St. John’s!

    Wendy

P.S. To Betty: the strongest thing The Jolie consumed while she was here in Saint John, New Brunswick was coffee (at least while I could see her!).

  10. I think Tristan and The Jolie are well matched. I would have liked to see how that battle ended.

  11. Spectra says:

Love the Cadbury-Egg-Wrapper-Foil orgy. Joilie is face-down in it. Shows committment.

I want her here in Jersey! Yes, I just spent a few days in Boston, which I think Jolie would have enjoyed. The whole “Boston Massacre” thing seems right up her alley.

Last Month, Wildwood New Jersey, and Cape May. Month before…New Hope, PA. Look that one up – where George Washington crossed the Delaware. We intend to go back soon. We do not need this little plastic, drunken (apparently) ingrate for a full week. I could cross the Delaware with her and be done with her in 3 days. Plus Lunch. What say ye?

  12. Laura says:

I love the fact that the cat is sniffing her the way he’d sniff a person, not a doll.

  13. Blogdramedy says:

This was my first foray into the travels of The Jolie. Brilliant idea…yours or hers?

    • omawarisan says:

Oh it was her idea to travel, she feels it puts her in a better position to save the world. I just try to line up her trips. Let me know if you want a visit!

  14. linlah says:

I’m so impressed the Jolie didn’t need a jacket on that visit.

  15. […] follow me on twitter and have somehow managed to miss this, I would point you in the direction of this. The tale of fun that was had when The Jolie decided to visit Newfoundland. Certainly reminds me why […]

  16. Brooke says:

Far travels for such a small Jolie! I’m so jealous she’s getting to see the world now!

  17. Complaints about snow…fights with the cat…and her head in a glass by the end of the night. Are you sure this wasn’t her visit to Iqaluit?

Love it…still need to make a journey down to your neck of the woods…it’s just lovely. I have a Cape Spear magnet on my fridge though…does that count? No, I suppose it doesn’t…what a great trip!

  18. I love any and all photos of The Jolie (but don’t tell her that), because she is so amusing (what I just said in the first parens, again). My favorite photo from this visit is the one where she taunts Dottie Maggie’s dog in the mouth of the Newfoundland. This is because 1) the dog looks like it’s spitting her out (good doggie, good doggie) and 2) I have been away from reading posts about her adventures (well, reading posts by every blogger that I follow) because of my move and, like a dog, I have my tail between my legs as a result.

I am also intrigued by the bottle with the giant kidney worms … WAIT! Just read the post! OH. MY. GOD. Now I am repulsed, yet relieved. Relieved to know that the bottle was not the Newfoundland equivalent of Tequila! WHOA! I never saw a GIANT. KIDNEY. WORM; I never hope to see one (other than in The Jolie photo); but I can tell you, anyhow, I’d rather see than be one. (Apologies to Gelett Burgess.) Dottie Maggie is SUPER VET, in my book!

The Jolie’s adventures go on, though I think that may be the only Giant Kidney Worm she sees. Her Hoboken, NJ adenture is about to be published, followed by Boise. She is seeing the world.
