The Definitive Star Spangled Banner

This morning, I woke up and found that a two other bloggers had posted nods to their favorite versions of The Star Spangled Banner. I’m good with that, Independence Day and all…

The first one I saw mentioned the Whitney Houston rendition of the song, as performed at the 1991 Super Bowl. Impressive? Yeah.

The next went with the Jimi Hendrix version, from Woodstock in 1969. Sure, Hendrix, I mean how do you not list that one?

You know, neither of them are wrong. But I’m throwing my favorite rendition out there for consideration.

There are clearer recordings of the Bruce Hornsby/Branford Marsalis version of the Banner I could have put up here for you. Because I am a life long Baltimore Orioles fan*, the Ripken game version had to be the one I used –

Simple. Pure. Right.

They even paused for the Orioles fans to yell “O!”, as required by law at all sporting events in the great state of Maryland.

God bless all the countries of the world, mine too.

* Any mention of my beloved Orioles requires me saying that what Peter Angelos has done to that franchise is shameful.

I had never heard the Hornsby/Marsalis version and it was beautiful, so thanks for that. Was it just my imagination or was he trying not to grin after the “O!” pause? Also, thanks for the link mention.

I’m glad you spotted the grin. I saw it this morning for the first time and thought, “nah, you just want him to be grinning.” It’s official now.

Ah, instrumental. A clever way to go. Very nice rendition. The part that gets me, though, is you have the wisdom to bless all countries of the world. You are advanced despite your limited species.

  3. That was one of the most beautiful renditions I’ve heard.
And baseball was better for having had Cal Ripken playing in it. (If I could change the lyrics of the Simon & Garfunkel song… Where have you gone, Cal Ripken…)

    Happy 4th!

  4. Before reading this, if asked, I’d have gone with Whitney’s, but this does have a little of all the right ingredients.

I got goosebumps at the shot of the 2130 and again just now as I typed that! Happy 4th.

  5. An Orioles fan! Mr. Weebles is also an Orioles fan. And bless his heart, even though I’m a Yankee fan, he married me anyway. We’re watching the Os/Yanks game right now. It’s about freaking time the Os got their due, they were floundering for so long. And Peter Angelos is the anti-Christ. Although in an Evil Off between Angelos and Dan Snyder of the Redskins, Snyder might win.

You must be special for him to put the Yankees thing aside.

The only time I’ve ever considered walking away from the O’s is when Angelos signed Albert Belle. Well, no, that’s the only time I had a focused reason beyond Angelos destroying my team.

Got a question for you…are you in Hoboken? (he asked, realizing he’s going to look like a whack job for asking)

      • I’m a mostly Os fan too, except for when they play the Yanks. Albert Belle was and is a scumbag. Also, yes, I am in Hoboken, how did you know?? Are you in my brain? Can you see me?? How many fingers am I holding up??

So, what's on your mind?
