Some might argue that, as a vampire, The Count has been dead for as long as any of us have known him. I’m telling you that this time it seems as if the dead has taken hold. If you checked his pulse, you would not count as high as 5 or 4 or even 3,2, or 1.
He will count no more.
No one really knows when The Count was born. His early years are a dark mystery, which seems appropriate for a counting vampire. He caught our attention on Sesame Street, was somehow unaffected by the bright light of fame, and never looked back into that darkness.
Von Count spent his last few decades passing on his love of counting to generations of children, but he remained a vampire at heart.
He never gave in to the temptation to become one of the fashionable “vampires” popularized in recent film and literature. In his twilight years, he looked down his prominent nose at these pretenders. Von Count remained a traditional vampire, in the classic style of Dracula and Nosferatu.
Not just any man can wear a cape. Tonight, heaven has Two! Two men who can wear capes! Bela Lugosi and Count Von Count! Let’s count them! One man in a cape! Two men in capes! Two!

Jerry Nelson was also the voice of Emmet Otter, and if you’ve never seen Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas, you’re really missing something.
I remember that coming out, but still haven’t seen it in the long years since.
Count me among his many fans! RIP Count von count!
Two!
NotElvis passed away 12 years ago today. Whoever’s in charge must have a thing for caped heroes this time of year. Thanks for the innumerable memories, Mr. Nelson.

He did more than teach children how to count. He taught my daughter how to double her allowance. Math was never my strong suit.

The Count had a lot of flair. He made counting things like raindrops and bricks seem cool. Deeply missed and I hope he’s having fun counting – well, what is there to count in heaven? One cloud, two clouds…
Not just anyone can make counting cool and be a friendly vampire at the same time. By my count, there is one.
Sad day for counting lovers everywhere. Caped heroes, though, eventually go the way of mere mortals. Heaven has gained a counting star!
So sad. He was a treasure.
Nicely done, Oma. This broke my heart almost as much as losing Kermit the Frog. Of course, there would be no Count, if it were not for Kermit.
Have you seen the documentary “Becoming Elmo”? Great documentary. I highly recommend it. In fact I give it – one thumb – no – two – two thumbs up! HA HA HA HA HAAAA!
Count Von Count was one of the many reasons I loved Sesame Street. RIP, count.
